The Corris Railway had existed from 1859 and was built to exploit the very high quality slate of the southern Meirionnydd area. At the start the 2’3” gauge railway was a horse-worked tramway. In 1864, they amended their Act to allow for the use of steam haulage. The prelude to this was re-laying the tramway in 1879 but the first locomotives were used for slate traffic from 1878. The first passenger service started in 1883. Three locomotives worked the line through years of prosperity and as decline set in post Great War, a new locomotive, the subject of our model was required. This Kerr Stuart locomotive operated the line with one of the older locomotives, number 3, until nationalisation and closure in 1948.Both these engines were rescued by the Talyllyn Preservation Society and

survive tothis day, albeit much rebuilt and altered, on the Talyllyn Railway. The Corris Railway Society commissioned the rebuilding of a replica Number 4 and that is now in service on the rebuilt Corris railway.
